Earlsdon RFC

11 - 15

(HT 0-0)

Southam RFC

Earlsdon RFC suffered a disappointing 15-11 loss at home to Southam RFC in a pivotal league clash at Mitchell Avenue.

With both teams battling for key positions in the table, the match was set to be a fierce contest, but Earlsdon fell short of their usual exacting standards. The home side started brightly, dominating possession and territory. A well-executed move saw Dyal finish in the corner for the opening try, followed by a penalty from Tague to stretch the lead to 8-0. Earlsdon looked in control and crossed the whitewash twice more, only for both tries to be ruled out as held up, leaving players and supporters frustrated.

Despite their dominance, Earlsdon failed to put Southam away, and just before halftime, the visitors capitalised on a lapse in concentration to score a try, reducing the deficit to 8-5 at the break.

The second half continued in similar fashion, with Earlsdon struggling to convert pressure into points. A penalty from McHugh gave them some breathing room at 11-5, but key decisions and missed opportunities began to take their toll. A high tackle on Lucas went unnoticed, and with players down injured, Southam took advantage of the disrupted defence to score a converted try, swinging the game in their favour. A further penalty goal extended their lead to 15-11.

Despite a late surge from the forwards, Earlsdon could not find a way through, falling to their first defeat in 10 games.

Head coach Jon Fitt pulled no punches in his post-match comments: “We were simply not at the standards we expect as an Earlsdon team, and trust me, we will address this in training this week. We lacked the clinical edge needed to finish the game off, and that is something we must put right. Every game is now a cup final for us, and we need to show the hunger and ruthlessness to stay in the fight for promotion.”

Final score: Earlsdon RFC 11 – 15 Southam
