Earlsdon RFC 1st XV battled through difficult weather conditions to secure a hard-fought 22-21 victory away at Coventry Welsh on Saturday. With relentless rain and swirling winds making handling difficult, this was always going to be a test of character—and Earlsdon showed plenty of it.
Despite the tricky conditions, Earlsdon started brightly, moving the ball well but struggling to find the final pass to unlock the home defence. Coventry Welsh, boasting a strong forward pack, began to gain control in the set-piece and were rewarded with an early penalty to take the lead.
Earlsdon responded quickly with a well-taken try from Jack Sarjaent, who led the team exceptionally well despite carrying his own injury. His leadership and determination were crucial in guiding the team through the tough periods and ultimately getting them over the line. The game became a seesaw battle, with neither side willing to back down. Further tries from Ollie Lee, Logan Walsh, and Sarjaent again took Earlsdon to 22 points, but Coventry Welsh kept the pressure on and stayed in the fight until the very end, pushing the visitors all the way.
The squad had to adapt to several changes this week, making the result even more impressive. To come through such a tough contest without dropping points was really pleasing, showing the resilience and togetherness of the group. Head Coach Jon Fitt praised the squad’s character and effort, particularly after last week’s disappointment.
“I want to take nothing away from Coventry Welsh,” Fitt said. “Their game plan and the way they executed it were excellent, which makes this result even more pleasing. We had to dig deep to get over the line, and the boys showed incredible heart.”
This performance gives Earlsdon great momentum heading into next week’s game against Harbury. With confidence high and the team showing real resilience, they’ll be looking to build on this result and put in another strong display.
