Match Report: Earlsdon Edge Harbury in Hard-Fought Away Victory
Harbury RFC 21 – 28 Earlsdon RFC
On a crisp Saturday afternoon, Earlsdon traveled to Harbury for their final away fixture of the season, determined to play with tempo against a big, physical opposition. The vocal home crowd made their presence felt from the first whistle, never shy in voicing their frustrations at the referee’s decisions, but it only added to the intensity of an already competitive fixture.
Harbury came out firing, using their aggressive ball carriers in the centres and back-row to crash over for an early try. However, Earlsdon responded brilliantly, sticking to their game plan and playing expansive, structured rugby. Sustained pressure inside the Harbury 22m led to Sam Mauch bulldozing his way over the line to level the score.
With Earlsdon now in control, their movement of the ball and relentless attack soon led to another breakthrough. A slick attacking sequence saw Deepinder Dyaldive over, capitalizing on the gaps created by the Harbury defense.
Just before the break came one of the game’s defining moments. Harbury had a scrum deep in their own half following a knock-on, but the Earlsdon pack overpowered them, turning the ball over. From there, Tom Bramwell seized his opportunity and crashed over, giving Earlsdon a 21-7 halftime lead.
Second Half Battle
As expected, Harbury came out swinging in the second half, using their physicality to force mistakes. They scored twice in quick succession, drawing level at 21-21 and setting up a tense final 20 minutes. The home crowd grew louder, urging their side forward and questioning every decision, but Earlsdon held their nerve.
The visitors thought they had sealed the game earlier, only for a knock-on over the try line to deny them. However, when Harbury made a crucial handling error, handing Earlsdon a scrum in a dangerous position, the chance to win the game presented itself. Staying patient through three controlled phases, Jack Haywood stepped up, slicing through the tired Harbury defense to score the match-winning try.
Men of the Match
-
Ash Jay-Tinkler – A masterful performance at scrum-half, executing the game plan to perfection and controlling the tempo.
-
Jack Davies – A dominant presence in the contact area, making crucial tackles and carrying with real intent.
Coach’s Verdict
Coach Jon Fitt praised his side’s commitment and mental toughness, highlighting how his players showed more desire to win than their opponents:
“We were just better in every department, and we managed the game and the situation brilliantly. The boys showed incredible character to keep pushing, and in the end, I think we simply wanted it more than Harbury. The referee did well in a highly competitive game, and despite the crowd’s reactions, he kept control of things throughout.”
With just one game remaining in the season, Earlsdon will look to finish on a high, building on this gritty, well-earned victory.
