Nuneaton Old Edwardians RFC
Earlsdon RFC

Earlsdon 1st XV booked their place in the Warwickshire Cup semi-finals with an outstanding away performance against Nuneaton Old Edwardians, executing the game plan with precision and composure from first whistle to last.

On a challenging evening under the lights, Earlsdon started with clear intent, controlling territory early through disciplined kicking and relentless line speed in defence. The opening breakthrough came after sustained pressure inside the Nuneaton half. A well-constructed phase sequence stretched the hosts before Knight finished clinically in the corner, rewarding the forwards’ hard work at the breakdown.

Nuneaton responded with physicality, but Earlsdon’s defensive structure held firm. The pack laid a strong platform at scrum time, while the lineout functioned smoothly, allowing the visitors to play in the right areas of the field. McHugh added the extras with a superb touchline conversion, setting the tone for what would become a flawless evening from the tee.

The second try reflected the side’s commitment to the set plan. After forcing a turnover through aggressive counter-rucking, quick ball allowed the backs to shift the point of attack. Harris timed his line perfectly to cut through a fractured defence and cross the whitewash. Once again, McHugh was on hand to slot the conversion and extend the advantage.

Throughout the second half, Earlsdon showed maturity beyond the occasion. Game management was clinical: exits were accurate, the chase was organised, and defensive discipline denied Nuneaton any real momentum. McHugh’s assured goal-kicking kept the scoreboard ticking and ensured there was no route back for the hosts.

It was a complete squad performance, with all 18 players contributing meaningfully to the victory. The impact from the bench maintained intensity and physicality, ensuring standards did not drop at any stage.

After the match, Head Coach Jon Fitt spoke of his immense pride in the group.

“The lads were outstanding,” he said. “We spoke all week about controlling territory, being ruthless in our execution, and trusting the structure we’ve built. They delivered that in every area. To come away to a tough side like Nuneaton Old Edwardians and perform like that shows the growth in this squad. From 1 to 18, everyone understood their role and carried out the plan brilliantly.”

The result sees Earlsdon move confidently into the semi-finals against Old Leamingtonians, with momentum building at just the right time in the season. If this performance is anything to go by, they will take some stopping.
