Match Report: Evesham 27 – 25 Earlsdon
Earlsdon suffered a narrow and frustrating 27–25 defeat away at Evesham on Saturday, conceding late after holding the lead with only a few minutes remaining.
It was a difficult result to take, especially given the effort and determination the boys showed throughout the match. The attitude, grit and real “dog” in the performance was outstanding, with the squad fighting for every inch right until the final whistle.
While it’s never something we like to focus on, there was a key moment late in the game where we felt a decision may not have gone our way and it ultimately proved costly. That said, we have to be accountable for ourselves and continue striving to be better in those decisive moments.
One really positive aspect of the day was seeing a number of players step up from the 2nd XV and perform so well. They slotted straight in and contributed massively to the performance, which speaks volumes about the strength in depth we are building across the club.
When we produced quick ball, our backline showed just how dangerous we can be. With plenty of pace across the field, we looked threatening whenever we managed to move the ball with tempo.
Max McHugh deserves special mention. He’s had a bit of stick from me as a coach in recent weeks, but his response on Saturday was outstanding. It was a fantastic performance and exactly the sort of reaction you want to see.
That said, the performance was built on collective effort. There were real warriors out there and I don’t want to single out too many individuals because the whole group put their bodies on the line. However, a huge thank you must go to Jason Deane and Mickey Moore, who battled incredibly hard after we lost interchanges early and dug in for the full 80 minutes.
Earlsdon’s tries came from Jack Haywood, Max McHugh, and Ben Thompson, keeping us right in the contest until the closing stages.
Attention now turns to another big challenge this weekend as we face third-placed Camp Hill. After the effort shown on Saturday, we know we’ll need to be ready for the physical challenge they’ll bring.
